Hot season is coming, the temperature will come up quickly. That means Golf Course will face will with some problems on grass. You can soon see some dry spots on the Course , the lake water level  goes down..etc. In order to prevent as much as possible the risks caused by hot season, some actions need to be done early like install more sprinklers where needed , hand watering , hollow tine …ect.

The main priority is to keep the Course in top condition and additional works like below is done when time allows:

  1. Clean and edging native areas
  2. Bunker Hole #3 filled to leave a bigger walk and less wear
  3. Fairway Hole #1 is made bigger

Starting after the Mercedes tournament, GCM will start hollow tine some selected walk off areas and then all fairways. Sometime in June, the greens will be hollow tined (the exact time will be posted later).

I quite often see golfers struggle due to poor understanding and technique in the bunkers; follow the steps below to make your bunker play more successful

  1. Square clubface and square stance – This will help you with your loft and aim
  2. Don’t dig in – The club is the right length to reach the bottom of the ball
  3. Balance over the ball –This means weight toward the ball and spine in line
  4. Stay Stable – Stable balance will maintain the low point in the swing which will improve the contact
  5. Slide don’t dig – The sole of the club slides through the top of the sand and the loft will push the ball out
  6. Check your follow through – Most golfers stop at the ball, keep the speed of the club swinging past the ball

Chip and Run

This term is misleading because all chip shots will have roll on them; follow this strategy to understand your distance control better

  1. Practice your ability to control where the ball will land – use a target area on the practice green
  2. Use the same landing area and then change your clubs – you can chip with any club in your bag, so learn how far they all roll
  3. On course look at what is in front of your ball eg. Bunker, high grass or only short grass
  4. Choose where you can comfortably land the ball – this will give you confidence to execute your shot
  5. Decide which club will give the most consistent amount of roll with that landing area and will provide the best chance of finishing near the hole

Until next time, enjoy your golf and remember the Golf Academy is available 7-days per week to improve your game!
